How Aromatherapy Transformed My Meditation Practice

Geposted von Jacqueline MacNeill am

I'll be honest with you — I didn't always meditate. 🧘‍♀️ For years I was too busy running Escents, blending oils, and trying to keep up with everything that comes with building a business from scratch. But when I finally slowed down and started a regular practice, I discovered something I probably should have known all along: the right scent changes everything.

After more than 30 years of crafting essential oil blends in our little studio in Richmond, BC, I've learned that scent is one of the most powerful tools we have for shifting our state of mind. And nowhere is that more true than in meditation.

"Scent bypasses the thinking mind and goes straight to how you feel. That's exactly what meditation is trying to do too."

Why Scent and Meditation Are a Natural Pair

When you inhale an essential oil, the scent molecules travel directly to the limbic system — the part of your brain that governs emotion, memory, and mood. It's one of the fastest ways to shift your nervous system from stressed to calm, from scattered to focused.

That's why I always say: don't wait until you're already relaxed to use your oils. Use them to get there. 🌿

Jacqui's Tip: Start With Scent, Then Sit

Before I sit down to meditate, I diffuse one of our Balanced Aromatherapy blends for about five minutes. By the time I close my eyes, the room already feels different — quieter somehow, even if nothing has changed. That's the magic of scent conditioning. Do it enough times and your brain starts to associate that aroma with calm. It becomes a shortcut to stillness.

My Go-To Blends for Meditation

Over the years I've tried them all, but these are the ones I keep coming back to:

Yoga

Top Notes: Jasmine + Sandalwood

This is my number one. Powdery, musky, and deeply grounding. There's something about sandalwood that just quiets the mental chatter. I wear it as a roll-on on my wrists before I sit — it's like a signal to my nervous system that it's time to slow down. 💜

Jacqui's tip: Roll it on your wrists, rub them together, and cup your hands over your nose for three slow breaths before you begin. Game changer.

Darjeeling

Top Notes: Sandalwood + Cedarwood

Rich, woody, and enveloping — like wrapping yourself in a warm blanket. I reach for Darjeeling on days when I feel unmoored or anxious. The depth of the cedarwood is incredibly anchoring.

What I love about it: It smells like a forest at dusk. Instantly grounding.

✨ New Arrivals

I'm so excited to introduce three beautiful new additions to the Escents family — each one grounding, natural, and handcrafted with love in Richmond, BC. 🌿

Oak Moss

Top Notes: Pine + Vetiver

Earthy, green, and deeply restorative. Oak Moss is what I reach for when I really need to reconnect with something bigger than my to-do list. The pine is crisp and forest-fresh, while vetiver anchors everything with a deep, smoky earthiness. Together they create something that feels ancient and grounding in the best possible way. 🌲

Available in: aroma blend, soap, reed diffuser, and more.

Water Lily

Top Notes: Jasmine + Muguet

Fresh, clean, and beautifully feminine. Water Lily is like a breath of spring air — light and delicate but with a quiet depth from the jasmine underneath. It's the blend I reach for when I want my meditation to feel open and expansive rather than heavy and grounding. 🦴

What I love about it: It's the perfect counterpoint to the woodier blends — airy, fresh, and genuinely uplifting.

Available in: aroma blend, soap, reed diffuser.

Leather Musk

Top Notes: Saffron + Cedar

Bold, warm, and sophisticated in a way that surprised even me when I first blended it. Saffron and cedar — it sounds unexpected, but together they create something deeply grounding and quietly confident. It's the scent I reach for when I want to feel centred and strong going into a big day. 🖤

What I love about it: It's not a typical "meditation" scent — it's more like armour. Wear it when you need to feel grounded and powerful, not just calm.

Available now in aroma blend and artisan soap — with the full range (roll-on, reed diffuser, lotion and more) launching very soon. Watch this space!

How to Use Essential Oils in Your Practice

You don't need a complicated ritual — here are three simple ways to bring aromatherapy into your meditation:

  • Diffuse it. Add 5–8 drops to your Dream Ceramic Diffuser and let the scent fill the room before you begin.
  • Wear it. Apply a roll-on to your wrists or the back of your neck. The warmth of your skin activates the oils beautifully.
  • Inhale directly. A drop on your palms, cupped over your nose, is one of the most immediate ways to shift your state.

A Note on Quality

This matters more than people realize. Synthetic fragrances don't have the same effect on the limbic system as true essential oils — they smell nice, but they don't carry the therapeutic compounds that make the difference. Everything we make at Escents uses 100% natural ingredients, no synthetics, no shortcuts. That's been our promise since 1992 and it always will be. 🍃
