Eucalyptus Globulus vs. Radiata: Which One Do You Need?
Share
Eucalyptus is a staple in any aromatherapy collection — but walk into our store and you'll find two distinct species: Globulus and Radiata. They smell similar, but they're not interchangeable. Here's what sets them apart.
Eucalyptus Globulus — The Powerhouse
This is the classic eucalyptus most people recognize — bold, sharp, and intensely camphorous. It has a very high 1,8-cineole content (up to 85%), making it one of the most potent respiratory oils available. It's excellent for chest congestion, sinus infections, and deep decongestion — but its strength means it should be used with care, especially around children under 10 and those with sensitive airways.

Eucalyptus Radiata — The Gentle All-Rounder
Radiata has a softer, fresher, slightly more floral scent than Globulus. It still contains 1,8-cineole but at lower levels, making it gentler and more versatile. It's the preferred choice for everyday use, diffusing, immune support, and use around older children and sensitive individuals. Many aromatherapists consider Radiata the more "user-friendly" eucalyptus.
