How Long Do Reed Diffusers Typically Last?

Reed diffusers are one of the most effortless ways to keep your home smelling beautiful around the clock. No flame, no electricity, no timers — just a bottle of naturally scented oil and a set of reeds doing the work for you. But how long do they actually last, and what can you do to get the most out of every bottle? Here is everything you need to know.
What Is a Reed Diffuser?
A reed diffuser consists of a glass or ceramic vessel filled with scented oil and a bundle of porous rattan reeds. The reeds absorb the oil and wick it upward, releasing fragrance passively into the air. Unlike candles or electric diffusers, there is nothing to switch on or monitor — the scent simply diffuses continuously.
They work beautifully in bathrooms, entryways, bedrooms and any space where you want a consistent ambient fragrance. Browse our Reed Diffuser collection — all made with 100% pure essential oils, no synthetic fragrance.

How Long Do Reed Diffusers Typically Last?
Most reed diffusers last between 1 and 6 months, though some can stretch to 12 months depending on the size of the bottle and the conditions in the room. A standard 100ml reed diffuser in a typical home environment will usually last 2 to 4 months.
Several factors affect how quickly the oil evaporates:
- Bottle size: More oil means a longer lifespan. Our 500ml Reed Diffusers are ideal for larger rooms and longer-lasting fragrance.
- Room temperature: Warmer rooms accelerate evaporation. A diffuser near a sunny window or heat source will empty faster.
- Airflow: High-traffic areas with lots of air movement — near vents, fans or open windows — will diffuse the oil more quickly.
- Humidity: More humid environments slow evaporation slightly, extending the life of the diffuser.
- Number of reeds: More reeds = stronger scent but faster oil consumption. Fewer reeds = subtler scent that lasts longer.
- Oil quality: Pure essential oil blends like Escents' formulas are designed specifically for reed diffusion and hold their scent longer than synthetic fragrance oils.
When to Replace Your Reeds
The reeds themselves need replacing before the oil runs out. Over time, the reeds become saturated with dust and residue, which blocks the pores and reduces scent throw. Signs it is time for new reeds:
- The scent has noticeably weakened even though oil remains in the bottle
- Flipping the reeds no longer refreshes the fragrance
- The reeds look discoloured, stiff or gunky
As a general rule, flip your reeds once a week to refresh the scent, and replace the reeds entirely every 2 to 3 months — or whenever you refill the bottle.
Tips to Make Your Reed Diffuser Last Longer
Choose the right location. Place your diffuser away from direct sunlight, heat sources and air vents. A stable, sheltered spot will slow evaporation and extend the life of the oil.
Use fewer reeds. If you want a subtler scent that lasts longer, simply remove a few reeds from the bundle. You can always add more back in when you want a stronger throw.
Flip regularly but not obsessively. Flipping the reeds once a week is enough to keep the scent fresh. Flipping too often accelerates oil consumption.
Keep the bottle topped up. Some of our reed diffusers are refillable. Topping up the oil before it runs completely dry helps preserve the reeds and keeps the scent consistent.
Start with quality oil. Escents reed diffusers use a 100% natural carrier base (Sopropylideneglycerol) blended with pure essential oils — no synthetic fragrance, no petrochemicals. This means the scent is true to the oil and lasts as long as possible without degrading.
