Why We Choose Chemical-Free Ingredients at Escents Aromatherapy

At Escents Aromatherapy, every product we make starts with a simple question: would we put this on our own skin?

It sounds obvious, but in an industry where ingredient lists can read like a chemistry textbook, it's a question worth asking. The truth is, many conventional body care products contain synthetic preservatives, artificial fragrances, and petrochemical-derived fillers — ingredients that do the job, but at a cost we're not willing to accept.

We believe your skin deserves better.

What "Chemical-Free" Really Means

We want to be honest with you: everything is technically a chemical — water, lavender oil, even vitamin C. When we say chemical-free, we mean free from synthetic chemicals — the artificial additives, parabens, DPG, and petroleum derivatives that have no place in a clean, plant-based formula.

Our products are built around pure essential oils, plant-derived carriers, and naturally sourced ingredients that your body recognizes and responds to.

Why It Matters

Your skin is your largest organ, and it absorbs what you put on it. Synthetic fragrances — one of the most common offenders in conventional products — are often made up of dozens of undisclosed chemicals. Parabens, used as preservatives, have been widely studied for their potential to disrupt hormones. And petrochemical fillers like mineral oil can actually block pores rather than nourish skin.

We choose not to use any of them.

What We Use Instead

Every Escents formula is built around ingredients with a purpose:

  • Pure essential oils — not synthetic fragrance oils. Real plant extracts with genuine therapeutic properties.
  • Jojoba oil — closely mimics the skin's natural sebum for balanced, non-greasy moisture.
  • Sweet almond oil — rich in fatty acids to soften and condition skin.
  • Grapeseed oil — lightweight and antioxidant-rich, absorbs quickly without clogging pores.
  • Evening primrose oil — packed with GLA to support skin elasticity and calm irritation.
  • Shea butter — deeply nourishing and naturally rich in vitamins A and E.
  • Cocoa butter — a luxurious emollient that locks in moisture and leaves skin silky smooth.

No parabens. No mineral oil. No phthalates. No DPG. No animal testing. No ingredients we can't explain.

Small-Batch, Made Fresh in Richmond, BC

We make our products in small batches in Richmond, BC — not because it's trendy, but because it's the only way to maintain the quality and freshness our formulas require. Essential oils are volatile and sensitive to heat and light. Fresh, small-batch production means you're getting a product at its most potent and effective.

A Standard We Hold Ourselves To

Choosing clean ingredients isn't always the easiest path. Natural preservatives require more care. Plant-based emulsifiers behave differently than synthetic ones. Small-batch production takes more time.

But we've never been interested in easy. We're interested in right — for your skin, for your health, and for the planet.

That's the Escents standard. And it's one we're not willing to compromise on.

A Canadian Story, Started at a Kiosk

Escents Aromatherapy began in 1992 — not in a lab, not in a boardroom, but at a humble kiosk. From the very beginning, we were a family-owned and operated business with a clear conviction: that pure, plant-based ingredients were simply better for people and the planet.

Over three decades later, that conviction hasn't changed. We're still family-owned. Still made in Canada. And still holding ourselves to the same standard we set on day one — no synthetic shortcuts, no compromises on quality.

What started as a small kiosk has grown into a full line of aromatherapy and body care products, but the heart of the business remains exactly the same: a family that genuinely cares about what goes into every bottle.
